It's a great dip to enjoy with any fruit, and the perfect way to get some extra protein in. Unlike regular cottage cheese, it has a smooth and creamy consistency. This delicious recipe is quick and easy to make and the perfect dip to enjoy as a great snack with an extra boost of protein.
It’s apple season, and back to school. We’re finally getting into a routine again, this week my girls have started after school activities again. This September has flown by, and I can hardly believe it’s the end of the month already.
Back to school, and after school activities for my kids means quick, healthy and delicious after school snacks are needed, and this is the perfect one.
To make this yummy apple dip, I started out with vanilla smooth cottage cheese, with 10g of protein per serving, and only 110 calories, perfect for fueling after school activities. Look for the smooth cottage cheese in the dairy section of your grocery store. If you can't find the vanilla smooth cottage cheese we can make our own.
Cottage Cheese
If you don't have the smooth cottage cheese we can make it from regular cottage cheese. If you're making the smooth cottage cheese the type of cottage cheese you start with matters. You will want to start with a cottage cheese that is 4% milk fat, or 2% at the very least. The small amount of fat helps create that creamy dip and smooth texture we're after, and none fat cottage cheese just doesn't work as well. To turn our regular cottage cheese into smooth blended cottage cheese we're going to use the food processor. If you're not a fan of the texture of cottage cheese, you might prefer it when it has a smoother consistency.
Can I Make This Dip With Yogurt Instead?
Yes, if you prefer try using Greek yogurt for the base. Buy it in vanilla flavor, or flavor it with honey and vanilla for this recipe.
Lower Calorie Version
If you want to make lower calorie version of this delicious high protein easy snack, you could use 2% cottage cheese as the base. Instead of adding in sugar or honey to sweeten the cottage cheese you could use a low calorie sweetener like monk fruit sugar, or stevia. You could even up the protein even more by adding in a scoop of protein powder in your favorite flavor. And instead of drizzling the top of the dip with dulce de leche or regular caramel sauce you could use a sugar free caramel sauce. or leave it off entirely. Add the walnuts if you choose, but leave off the toffee bits for a lower calorie sweet treat that's a great source of protein. This healthy fruit dip made with simple ingredients is sure to become a new favorite.
Chocolate Smooth Cottage Cheese
Love chocolate and want to try a chocolate version of our sweet cottage cheese dip? Try adding in 2 tablespoon of cocoa powder when you're blending it in the food processor. You could also use a chocolate syrup drizzle over the top instead of caramel sauce to turn this into a chocolate fruit dip.
Make It Savory
If you prefer savoury instead of a sweet dip you can use this same process of blending the cottage cheese in the food processor to make it smooth, and then add in some savoury ingredients. Instead of adding sweetness and vanilla you could add in some savory ingredients like ranch seasoning blends, or try adding in some garlic and herbs like fresh basil, oregano, and fresh dill. along with some onion powder, black pepper or red pepper flakes for spice. Serve the savory cottage cheese dip with fresh veggies and tortilla chips or pita chips as a great healthy dip.
We served our smooth cottage cheese dip with sliced apples. We love using honey crisp apples because they're so sweet and crisp. You could also use this fun fruit dip with other fresh fruit like strawberries, pineapple, or canteloup. This would also be a delicious dip with graham crackers, or vanilla wafers, or any of your other favorite dippers.
If you have leftover whipped cottage cheese dip you can store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
This dip is a great way to get some high protein content in your diet. The creamy texture of this cottage cheese dip recipe is so delicious. The addition of the caramel sauce and walnuts make this apple dip taste like a caramel apple treat.
