This mini apple crisp in a mason jar is such an easy, delicious fall dessert. Baked in a mason jar, it's perfectly portioned for one mini serving. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious apple crisp dessert. We love the contrast of the sweet and tart apples that become soft as they bake with the crisp and crumbly topping.
This is the recipe my mom used when I was a little girl to make apple crisp. I’ve updated it a little by making it apple crisp in a mason jar, because everything tastes better in a mason jar, right? Or, you can bake it in one big 8 x 8 baking dish if you prefer.
Apple crisp always one of my favorite things as a kid. When I was in grade two, I had to bake a snack for an after school girls club. Running short on time, I had to come home from school for lunch the day I needed it and quickly make it. My mom had carefully pre-measured all the ingredients out for me, and prepared all the apples already for me when I got there. All I had to do was mix together the pre-measured crisp ingredients and put it together.
That night after the club meeting, she asked me how the apple crisp turned out. I replied “it was so good Mom, way better than when you make it.” She’s reminded me of it just about every time we’ve had apple crisp since. What can I say Mom, I’ve always been a great cook. 😉
Crisp vs. Crumble
Both a crisp and crumble are a baked fruit based dessert that is topped with crispy strudel type of topping. A crisp contains oats in the topping and crumble does not.
Apples
We like to use a cooking apple for this recipe. Our favourite our MacIntosh apples. Cooking apples are tend to be more firm so they can still hold their shape after cooking. You can use any cooking apples you like best fo rthis recipe.
Mason Jars -A Word Of Warning
Making desserts in a mason jar has become a popular way to make individual servings. We baked our apple crisp right in the mason jar. We've never had any problems doing this, but officially it is not recommended to bake desserts in the oven inside a mason jar. The glass is not meant to be used as bakeware, and there is some danger of the glass breaking, which of course could lead to injury.
If you're worried about using a mason jar for baking, you can make these in individual ramekins. They're the same size and meant for baking and a really great alternative. If you really love the look of serving in a mason jar but not the idea of baking in one, you could make a larger apple crisp following the recipe and baking it in one large baking dish, and then spoon the baked apple crisp into the small mason jars just for serving.
Serve your apple crisp while it's still warm, or at room temperature. Store any leftover apple crisp desserts in the fridge with the lids on the jars, or covered in plastic wrap to make an airtight container.
Serving Suggestions
I love to serve this mason jar apple crisp warm, with a little vanilla bean ice cream, yum. These are also really delicous served with whipped cream. You can also add a drizzle of caramel sauce for serving.
Thee mini dessert mason jar apple crisps are the perfect serving size. Baking them in the jars, makes them so easy to serve. These are one of my favorite recipes for fall during apple season. It's sure to be one of your new favorite apple desserts too.
