Kid Friendly Ingredients
The best part of making your own DiY bath bombs is that you can make thiem with kid friendly, safe, simple ingredients. Commercial bath bombs sometimes contain harsh chemicals, and can even lead to allergic reactions for sensitive skin. Our DIY bath bombs recipe is full of natural ingredients. If your child has particularly sensitive skin you can even choose to leave out any scent.
How Bath Bombs Work
Bath bombs get the name bomb because of the fizz that happens when they hit the warm water. When the sodium bicarbonate and the citric acid hit the water they have a chemical reaction that creates carbon dioxide and makes the wonderful fizz effect. That's why these are the main ingredients in our bath bomb. The bicarbonate of soda and citric acid ingredients and the chemical reaction are totally safe for your skin. The color is added for interest, the essential oil adds a soothing scent, and the olive oil is good for your skin. The witch hazel is an important ingredient in your bath bomb too. The witch hazel helps bind the ingredients together, and create the sand like texture so that you can form it into the bath bomb mold. Over time the witch hazel evaporates, living the dry hardened bath bomb.
Did you know that bath bombs have a shelf life? Citric acid and baking soda oxidize over time and will react less with water. Be sure to use up your bath bombs within six months for the best results.
Handmade Gifts
Homemade bath bombs also make the most perfect gifts. Choose little toys that your recipient will love. Small plastic toys work really well. We used bunnies for Easter, but look for dinosaurs for the dinosaur lover, fairies, unicorns, even small cars would all work really well for this and make a great gift.
Toys
I used some sweet little Easter bunny plastic toys I found at the dollar store, but you could certainly personalize it for someone special. How about mini dinosaurs for the dino lover you know, or shopkins, or little plastic unicorns? Little cars would be a fun choice too. So many fun possibilities. When you're choosing your toys be sure to look for something small enough to fit inside your mold with some room to spare around it. You need a good amount of the bath bomb around the toy to make sure that it holds together well and doesn't fall apart when you unmold it.
You also need a toy that is waterproof. The toy will be revealed as the bath bomb dissolves in a warm bath. So make sure your toy is something that can get wet. Plastic items work really well.

The Bath Bomb Mold
We made our bath bombs for Easter and thought it was so fun to reuse some plastic Easter eggs as the molds.
Variations
When it comes to adding variations to your easy bath bomb recipe feel free to try lots of different colors and scents. We made some light pink, some light blue. You can even make different layers of color in your bath bath to create a striped effect. To create the different colors just add a few drops of food coloring to the liquid mixture.
The sky is really the limit when it comes to combining different colors and scents. We made our bath bombs with either vanilla and lavender essential oil. It only takes a few drops of essential oils to add a beautiful scent. This creates a wonderful sensory experience for kids. Sweet almond oil is another great choice.
Another fun idea is to add some dried flower petals to your homemade bath bomb recipe. Real dried lavender or rose petals make a fun addition and add a little magic and so much fun.
These are a little fiddly, and we did break some un-moulding them. If you’re worried an making the Easter egg version, you could just give them inside the plastic Easter egg. We did get the hang of it though, and had lots of successes too.
We wrapped some of ours up in cellophane bags and tied them with ribbon. This makes them perfect for gift giving with a cute bow and gift tag.
We made ours in the shape of an Easter egg to make the perfect addition to any Easter basket. Another idea is to use a heart shaped mold for Valentine's Day with a special Valentine's Day toy inside. This DIY bath bomb recipe is so fun and easy to make that they'd be a great craft idea for kids to make at summer camp, or at a club. You could also make them at school for a Mother's Day gift, just leave the toy out, and let the children pick food colors and a scent they think their mother will enjoy. Who won't love homemade beauty products as lovely thoughtful gift? If you're making these in larger quantities be sure to look for the citric acid at the health food store, were we able to buy just the amount we needed in the bulk section.
