Witch Halloween Decor: inspired by Harry Potter, our garden shed is full of vintage and elegant witch decorations perfect for Halloween.

It wouldn't be Halloween without a little witch Halloween decor. Inspired by all things Harry Potter, we used lots of vintage finds to create a witchy feel in our little garden shed. This would be a really fun addition to a Halloween party, or instead of giving out candy on my front porch this year, perhaps I'll invite trick or treaters with their parents into the witch shed, and put on a witch costume for the evening.
I've been seeing lots of really fun outdoor play house decorating for Halloween on Instagram the last few weeks, and I thought why not create an adult version to enjoy this Halloween. So I got busy adding lots of fun witchy pieces to my garden shed.
The Garden Shed
Way back when the pandemic started and we were all home more than usual, we decided to makeover our side yard -read all about the whole process of our DIY portager garden here. We added raised beds, with pea gravel paths and this amazing cedar shed. It was intended to hold our garden tools in the summer, and some of our outdoor furniture during our cold and snowy Canadian winters. It has worked out really well, but beyond just being really functional, it's also turned out to be incredibly cute.
A Witch's Garden
We added some chairs outside for a sitting area, and inside we put in an old antique hutch for storage and a removable little desk worktop spot. It's been used on and off as a sweet little extra office space in the spring and the fall. This halloween with the addition of some halloween decor items, it's turned into a witch's garden shed, the perfect spot for collecting things for potions, and growing and drying them. This would also be really fun in your living room for a party.
Harry Potter Inspiration
A few years ago we had the chance to go to Universal and I loved all the amazing Harry Potter rides, and gift shops, It really felt like you were entering a different world. I absolutely loved all the attention to detail and it definitely inspired me as I created this witchy Halloween shed with a real Harry Potter feel to it. If you love Harry Potter check out more of my Halloween Harry Potter decor here.
Inside The Witchy Shed
I made a fun moon shaped wreath, with butterflies, stars, pumpkins, and disco balls. I'm be sharing more details about how I made it next week.
Along with the beautiful DIY halloween wreath, there are also lots and lots of pumpkins. They've got to be any good witches favourite thing to grow, don't you think?
The Antique Hutch
On one side of the witchy shed we have our little antique hutch, and it's filled with everything you need for creating potions.
The setting here is a garden shed, so there's lots of garden tools and pots. Next, layered with that are lots of different preserved insects, candles, orange pumpkins, and white pumpkins. There is also some different vintage scientific glass containers, and beakers, ready for collecting seeds or making potions.
The Shelf
As you enter the shed, there's a little shelf that is used to hang garden tools, and on top a few witchy treasures. We have an old clock, and set of vintage trophies -best potion awards perhaps? best pumpkin? or fastest in the broom flying race? And on the other side a few witchy family portraits. These were so easy to put together. I found a few vintage photos on-line and printed them on my home printer. Then I added them to some vintage gold and brass frames from the thrift store. And also, down on the floor, there's a pair of boots ready for some work in the garden -or to be part of a Halloween costume. 😉
The Witch's Desk
Over on the other side of the shed, our witchy friend looks like she's been very busy working. This area is my very favourite. It's a little cluttered, and full of magic.
There's lots of fun details on the desk area.
Pet Crows
There are some pet crows in the bird cage. I wonder if the with has black cats too? Or a few pet plastic spiders? The cage was a thrift store find spray painted white, and the birds are from the dollar store.
Witch Family Photos
There's also more family photos -aren't they festive in their witches’ hats? To make them grab some old frames at the thrifts store, and look for vintage witch photos on-line. Print out some with your home computer and add to the frames for your own witch family photos.
Mushrooms and Witch Hat
There's also some free prints of vintage botanical pink mushrooms pinned up -you can read more about the mushrooms here. And she's left her witch hat on the chair. I found this perfect black hat at the dollar store. It had some black tulle with stars on it, which I easily removed. I thought our garden witch would have an altogether more practical black hat.
On the left side there's a cycle of the moons phases made of polymer clay, and painted gold. There's also more scientific glass with collections of seeds, chestnuts, and pods. This pair of vintage glasses looks ready to help her read a spell book.
And one more adorable DIY, are these mushrooms in a teacup. They look so great with the DIY velvet mushrooms I made for here in the spring -see the tutorial on how to make DIY velvet mushrooms here.
This little witchy shed was so much fun to put together. I used mostly vintage pieces I had from thrift stores, and antique shops. It's my own little Halloween-y version of a garden shed right out of the set of Harry Potter. Can't you just imagine Professor Minerva McGonagall, or Professor Pomoma Sprout in a black dress puttering about in here?
With your own little witchy Halloween shed in your backyard, life really is a party.

What a cute workspace! I would totally escape out here in the summer and fall to work! Love how you incorporated some more feminine colours into the fall decor - so pretty!
