Pie Stand: Perfect for your next party, a pie stand your guests will LOVE. Includes a free printable, and lots of great pie recipes.
This weekend for Father's Day we made pie, lots and lots of pie, and set up a fun Pie Stand dessert table for our family celebration. I think it just might have been one of our best ideas ever. 😉 It was a labor of love and all our family members loved it. This pie dessert table is perfect for celebrating any special occasion. It would also be amazing at as a wedding dessesrt table, or for a birthday. It was inspired by my sweet husbands love of pie. Dessert bars are such a sweet treat for a special event. Guests can help themselves and enjoy a little bit of everything. It's such a fun way to serve a special dessert for a crowd any time of year.
The Pie Stand
I set up the pie stand under some nice trees in the backyard. I used the blue bunting I made last Father's Day out of old men's shirts over the stand. I used the different shades of blue as the colour scheme, which seemed really fitting for Father's Day. If the pie dessert table were for a rustic wedding pie buffet or a baby shower, white bunting would be a great choice too. A pie buffet is a great alternative to a traditional wedding cake. It's also a great option for a thanksgiving pie table.
Another fun addition to the table was this cute "I love you even more than I love pie" sign.
I spelled out the word "pie" from some letters I had around the house as another fun decorative detail for the dessert table sign.
An old crate worked really well to create height and add different levels to the dessert table and hold some mini pies and tarts. Also be sure to include a knife and a few pie servers so that everyone can cut a slice of pie that's just the right size for them.
The Pies
The star of the show was of course the pie! We had so many great traditional pie flavors for our pie dessert bar. There was:
- blueberry crumble mini pies
- rhubarb custard tarts
- mini apple pies
- banana cream pies in a mason jar
- cherry pie
- coconut cream pie
- strawberry rhubarb pie
It was great to have a variety of sizes from full pies all the way down to tarts, and so many different flavors to choose from. Since our pie stand was set up in the summer, we had lots of seasonal favorites. If you were doing something similar in the fall or for the holiday season you might want to also include pecan pie or pumpkin pie. Another great summer addition would be lemon meringue pie or key lime pie.
We made the banana cream pie in a mason jar and it was so cute. They were quite easy to make with a simple graham cracker crust. These cutie pie jars looked so good as part of our pie stand, and were the perfect single serving.
My favorite pie was the cherry pie, displayed on a wood cake stand.
And, my husband's favorite, coconut cream, with a sweet little mini bunting made with a little embroidery thread to match the other larger bunting over the pie stand.
My daughters made the mini apple pies, some with double crust, and some with crumble. The middle pie is strawberry rhubarb. This one and the rhubarb custard tarts were made by my sweet sister-in-law Heather -thanks for catching the vision Heather! Heather is a fellow pie lover.
We had vanilla whipped cream and vanilla ice cream to top off the pies in the perfect way.
The Pie Recipes
I am not an experienced pie maker; experienced pie eater, yes. My mom is amazing at making pie dough, but I've always been a little afraid of it. We decided to conquer our pie crust making fears and just go for, I mean after all, not great pie crust is still pie, which is still pretty great. 😉
I'm not going to lie and say it was easy. Whoever first said "easy as pie", well let's just say they may have been a liar.
The Pie Crust
We started out with making a whole lot of pie crust. I used this recipe from the crisco website for "Easy as Pie" Pastry Dough.
I made one batch with one daughter, while my husband made another batch with the other daughter -since we knew we needed a whole-lot-a-crust for the variety of flavors of pie we wanted to make. If you're not up for making your own pie crust, you can use pre-made crusts to make this process a little quicker and easier.
Apple Pie
For the apple we used an old family recipe, and it turned out great.
Blueberry Crumble Pie
For the blueberry filling and crumble we used good old Martha's recipes -blueberry filling here, and crumble (which we also used for some of the apple) here.
These were really, really good, and I would definitely use this recipe again.
Coconut Pie
For the coconut I used a packaged coconut pudding that you cook on the stove top. After cooking and cooling an empty pie shell, we added the pudding.
After it cooled we topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut. It was quite easy to make, but did involve a lot of steps and a lot of waiting in between. This is my husbands favorite flavor and he would say it was worth it.
Mini Banana Cream Pies
The final pies I made were these cute little mini banana cream pies as individual pies in mason jars.
I added some graham crackers to make the bottom crust and baked for 10 min. (just follow the directions on the package for making pie crust). Then I added banana pudding, over some slices of banana.
After they cooled I topped with whipped cream, and sprinkled with some remaining graham cracker crumbs. This one, with no pastry was by far the easiest, and really yummy too.
The pie stand was a huge hit, and making pies together as a family was really fun, and will be a great memory for years to come. A pie dessert table is such a great way to serve dessert to a large group. Whether you're celebrating for Father's day like us, as part of your special day with a wedding dessert table, for a special birthday, or any other special event a pie stand is sure to be a great hit.
With this much wonderful pie, life truly is a party!
