Easy Banana Cream Pie: so quick and easy, graham cracker crust, banana pudding, sliced bananas and whipped cream make this family favourite.
Banana Cream Pie is an old family favourite. My mom used to make this pie when I was growing up. I know why she loved to make it, because it's super quick and easy. And it really tastes amazing too.
If you love bananas, and creamy desserts, you will love this easy banana cream pie recipe.
Pie Crust
The secret to it being so easy is that it uses a graham cracker pie crust. So if making pie pastry crust out of homemade pie dough is not your favourite, then you will love how quickly this graham cracker pie shell comes together. I've included the recipe to make the homemade graham cracker crust, but if you want to save even more time, you could buy the pie crust already made. The graham crackers make a wonderful buttery graham cracker crust, and it's very quick to put together. Of course, if you love traditional regular pie crust, you could use it instead. Just blind bake your favourite pie pastry in a pie dish. This pie is really delicious with a traditional pie crust too.
Pudding
The other big time saver is using a pudding mix for the pudding layer in this pie. You can use instant banana pudding, or a cooked banana pudding. Where I live, you can't find banana instant pudding mix easily, so I always use the cooked one. Some people like to substitute vanilla pudding, but I really thing the banana pudding adds a lot more banana goodness to this no bake banana cream pie. If you can't get banana pudding mix though, you can certainly try the vanilla pudding mix instead.
Bananas
There's a delicious layer of fresh banana slices in this pie. Bananas do oxidixe and turn brown after they're sliced, but sandwiching them between the cream and the pudding layer keep them from being too exposed to the air. Be sure to wait until the pudding is cooled if you're using a cooked pudding, and then add your banana slices and whipped cream at the same time. This is a great way to use up ripe bananas.
Whipped Cream
The whipped cream on top of the pie puts the cream in our homemade banana cream pie. I always use real homemade whipped cream. It really doesn't take very long to make it from scratch, and it adds so much flavor to the finished pie. Yes you can substitute whipped topping in place of fresh whipped cream, if you prefer cool whip. Do not use canned whipped cream for this pie, as it will deflate and turn liquidy soon after it's sprayed out of the can. I like to whip my heavy cream with sugar and vanilla to stiff peaks. And make sure to refrigerate the pie, especially in warmer months, so that your whipped cream doesn't start to melt and go watery on your pie.
Some People like to combine their banana pudding and whipped cream together into one single layer, but I like to layer it separately into the pie, and keep the two distinct flavors and textures.
Store any unused portions of the pie in the refrigerator, in an airtight container or covered in a piece of plastic wrap.
Garnish
You can garnish this pie with a few fresh banana slices to garnish, but be sure to do this step right before serving as fresh bananas will oxidize and turn brown when exposed to the air. You can also try dipping the banana slices for garnishing the banana pie into lemon juice to keep them from turning brown. Some people like to drizzle the pie slice with a caramel sauce for garnish.
Chocolate Lovers
If you're a chocolate lover, you can garnish this pie with chocolate syrup or chocolate shavings. As another option, you can even try making this pie with chocolate pudding for a chocolate banana cream pie.
This classic banana cream pie such a great recipe. Made from simple ingredients and so quick and easy to make, it's sure to become one of your favorite desserts to make. It's perfect for family gatherings or entertaining and a wonderful recipe for anyone who loves delicious banana pudding pie. The fresh slices of banana, creamy texture, and buttery crust make this delicious dessert one of our favorite cream pies.
