BookPage Butterfly Spring Wreath: this simple and inexpensive DIY wreath is made by cutting your own butterflies out of old books.

It's the first day of spring, and the weather is slowly starting to warm up. I thought this new BookPage Butterfly Spring Wreath was the perfect way to celebrate spring's official arrival. It was really quite easy to put together.
This wreath was a pretty simple idea -a moss wreath with book page butterflies. Like most projects, I could picture it in my mind before I figured out how to create it. And this was one of those very few occasions when the reality turned out better than I'd even imagined. Don't you just love it when that happens?
Everything I used I already had, but you could make it really inexpensively too, since the books are just used books from the thrift store.

Everything I used I already had, but you could make it really inexpensively too with just a few craft supplies, since the books are just used books from the thrift store. It's quite an easy butterfly wreath to make too. I always love doing spring projects. Mother nature is great inspiration when everything starts to come alive again in the spring.
Materials:
- large straw wreath
- moss
- hot glue gun
- hot glue
- old books, and some white paper
- scissors
How To Make A BookPage Butterfly Spring Wreath:
The Wreath Base
1. Start by covering your straw wreath form with moss. You could also use a styrofoam wreath base for this project. I used some moss that I had collected and was dried out and attached to the wreath with hot glue. I didn't cover the back of the wreath, since it isn't visible.
Book Page Butterflies
2. Next, I cut out some different shapes and sizes of butterflies out of some old book pages, that I ripped out of old second hand store books. To make the paper butterflies, I looked at a few different butterfly clip art images on-line for inspiration with the butterfly shape. Then I folded the book page in half, and drew the design with a pencil, and then cut it out with scissors. I liked cutting them out individually and free handing the pattern in pencil because it creates lots of variation, instead of having the same size and shape over and over.
3. Once the butterflies were all cut out, I used hot glue to attach them to the moss. I made sure to add the largest butterflies to the middle, and had them get smaller and smaller out to the edges.
Hanging Ribbon
4. Lastly I attached a ribbon to the top of the wreath to hang it up. It was really simple to make, and a great way to welcome spring.
Neutral or Colourful
Using book pages for the butterflies created a really neutral wreath, that works with any home decor. If you prefer more vibrant color for spring, you could water color your book page butterflies in different rainbow colors, or different shades of one color, depending on the look you're going for. Both different ways would be really beautiful options. Imagine it with the book page butterflies watercolored pink for a baby girls room.
I just love this little wreath, and it's perfect for spring decor, or on your front door if it's covered -keeping in mind that the paper is of course not waterproof.
It's made from just a few simple materials. If you're like me you might even have them around the house, or be able to find the moss in the woods, making this a fun project to do without even needing to visit any craft stores for supplies.
With a pretty BookPage Butterfly Spring Wreath, life really is a party!
