Butterfly Spring Mantel: DIY pastel clay mushrooms, and watercolour rainbow butterflies made from old book pages make a magical spring mantel.
This spring mantel is full of rainbows and butterflies and mushrooms... there's everything but fairies and they might show up any minute! This butterfly spring mantel was so fun to put together, and full of easy crafts and DIYs. This is the perfect little project for a maker this spring.
DIY Mushrooms
The starting place for this mantel was the fun pastel coloured mushrooms. I made them from air dry clay and painted them. There is a full tutorial on how to make them in this Spring Mushroom Wreath post, where I used them as well.
Once they were dry, I drilled small holes in the wood pieces and stuck them in. This worked really well. Then I added some moss to the wood stumps as well.
There are also a few other mushrooms tucked in, including some paper mache ones that I made a few years ago. I used a tin foil base for them and then paper maced them with old book pages.
A Rainbow of Butterflies
I also made a rainbow of butterflies for the mantel. My cricut worked great to cut out some water colour paper -find my cut file here. I made three sizes of butterflies. Then I cut some out of old book pages.
I used watercolours in different shades of pink, yellow, green, and blue (to match my kitchen shelves that you'll see on my spring home tour next week). Be sure to paint them on both sides so that the book pages don't curl up.
Once the butterflies were dry I hung them on the blackboard with simple tape rolls. I tried to fold their wings up a little to give them a little dimension.
I love how they turned out. This project cost me next to nothing because I had all the materials already and I'm so pleased with it.
Macrame and Butterfly Bunting
I thought it would be fun to bring the butterfly themed down to the front of the mantel too, so I layered a little butterfly garland on top of the macrame bunting. See how I made the macrame here.
To make the butterfly garland I used more of the watercolored butterflies and sewed them on my sewing machine.
This spring butterfly mantel feels so perfect for spring, and I really did have fun crafting all the elements for it one weekend.

Your mantel is so beautiful and whimsical. It reminds me of something from Anthropologie. I love your clay mushroom and the paper butterflies. So pretty!
