What better way could their be to celebrate Canada Day than a classic backyard BBQ with family and friends? The star of the party was our Make-Your-Own Burger Bar! This is the perfect meal idea for a party, and one your guests will love. We're also sharing ideas for decor, and free Canada Day printables to take your get together to the next level!
I set everything up for our July 1st Canada Day barbecue in our backyard. We started out with some fun Canada Day decorations. Confession time, I'm not a huge fan of the colour red. But I do love Canada, and you can't really have a Canada Day party without some red. In the name of patriotism I did include some, but also lots of black and white and I love how it turned out.
Canada Day Party Decorations
We added some cute pillows and they were the inspiration for the Free Canada Day printables we made for the party, that you can download below. I love the black and white. I set these up in our seating area, so guests could fix themselves a burger and enjoy it here for a relaxed afternoon.
Under the pergola I set up our Burger Bar. Above the table, in the midst of our hanging lanterns, I added some fun Canada Day string lights. They're the perfect festive touch for Canada Day weekend.
The Table
To decorate the table I started with an amazing throw blanket that I used as a tablecloth for a rustic vibe.
On the table I added some succulents that in a pretty galvanized caddy. I love that I'll be able to enjoy these plants all summer long. And then I popped in a few Canadian flags. You can't really have a Canada Day bbq without a Canadian flag, can you?
I also added some maple tree branches, and fun letter board message. Using a maple leaf branch instead of flowers is such a great option for Canada Day.
On the front of the table we hung our free printable Canada Day banner. Choose from "True North" and "Happy Canada Day" in black or red as a great way to add a patriotic touch. These are available to subscribers below.
We used some new dish cloths as the perfect relaxed rustic outdoor napkins. Holding our cutlery and tied with red and white ribbon they're looking festive and very practical for a backyard barbecue and messy burgers!
The Food
The star of this party is the Make-Your-Own Burger Bar. It's perfect for any easy summer entertaining. We started out with our burgers, in regular or brioche buns. The Canada Day picks are the perfect touch -grab them below. Hot dogs would be a great option too, especially for kids.
We served our burgers on a rustic wood cutting board, which looked great and when with our rustic vibe for the party.
We served beef burgers for our get together. You could also include veggie burgers as an easy veggie option. We also love to include turkey burgers, lamb burgers, or different kinds of beef burgers for a larger get together, where you can offer more options.
Canada Day Menu
The best part of this party was the burger bar board of toppings for guests to enjoy. We including:
- bacon
- fried onions
- fried mushrooms
- Swiss cheese
- havarti cheese
- American cheese
- lettuce
- tomatoes
- onion
- dill pickles
Our guests customizing their own burgers with whatever they wanted. The board was such a great way to offer all these fun choices. It looked amazing, and it was also really easy for guests to help themselves. Don't skip the bacon, different cheese options, and fried onions and mushrooms. These were everyone's favourites and make the whole experience a little more special and out of the ordinary. Bacon really does make everything better
And I used the a mason jar caddy to hold all the condiments for the burgers. We had:
- mustard
- sweet relish
- hamburger relish
- ketchup
- burger sauce
- hot peppers
BBQ sauce would be a good option too. The caddy worked so well for serving. It was nice to keep the less attractive bottles off of the table for a special get together like this. Everyone could see exactly what they wanted in the clear glass caddy and with our printable labels and it looked great.
Along with burgers we offered some assorted potato chips for a really relaxed and easy menu. I like this as any easy alternative to side dishes like potato salad, because you can serve them at room temperature don't have to worry about keeping them cold or spoiling.
Drinks
I found some pop shoppe pop at Giant Tiger and thought the red and white striped bottles were perfect for our colour scheme. We added on some paper straws and our festive Canada Day straw flags that you can download as part of our Free Canada Day collection of printables. Just print them on your home printer, cut them out and glue them to the straws. These cold drinks were perfect on a hot day.
