This Caramel Pumpkin Butter only has 3 ingredients. So it’s easy to make and so, so yummy! It’s the perfect taste of fall. It would be delicious on fresh bread or your morning toast, or a muffin. It’s especially good though to bring the flavours of fall to s’mores!
I was out shopping one day at William-Sonoma and I came across a little jar of caramel pumpkin butter. I thought that it sounded delicious, and set about coming out with a homemade version. It's so good and decadent, and perfect for fall. I'm a big fan of fruit butters. You can find my slow cooker apple butter recipe here.
Pumpkin
You can use simple store-bought pumpkin puree for this recipe. A can of pumpkin puree works well for this recipe, just be sure you're not using pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling has spices and sugar added and would be too sweet for this recipe.
You can also use fresh pumpkin puree for this recipe. If you're making your own pumpkin puree, be sure to use sugar pie pumpkins, which are the small sweet ones. The larger kind of pumpkin are best for decor and not as sweet as pie pumpkins. We roasted our pumpkin for this recipe and when it was cooked and cooled a little we scraped it out and pureed it in my food processor. This recipe only uses a ¼ of pumpkin puree, so if you make your own you'll have lots leftover. You can store it in fridge or freezer.
Caramel
This homemade pumpkin butter recipe goes a step above just being a butter because it's a combination of pumpkin and caramel. We used dulce de leche as our caramel component. It's perfect for this recipe. It's smooth and creamy and rich in flavor. Regular caramel is made from water and sugar that is slowly cooked until it caramelizes. Dulche de leche is made from slowly cooking milk and sugar. It yields a much creamer caramel. It still has the flavor of caramelized sugar, but it's not just sweet, it's creamy and rich in flavor.
Look for dulce de leche with the condensed milk in the baking aisle of the grocery store. If you can't find dulche le leche already prepared, you can buy a tin of condensed milk and make your own. The usual way of making it is to place the unopened tin of condensed milk in a pot and cover the can with water. Bring the water to a boil and let it simmer for 2 hours. Be very sure to check on the water levels every ½ hour. Do not let the water boil dry, or the can could explode. Top up the water every ½ hour as needed to keep the can covered.
Pumpkin PIe Spice
The final ingredient in our 3 ingredient simple recipe is pumpkin pie spice. Pumpkin pie spice is a blend of fall spices made from cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. It's full of fall flavors. It'a great addition to many pumpkin recipes, and a favorite of pumpkin lovers. It's a perfect addition to our caramel pumpkin butter.
This homemade caramel pumpkin butter would also make a lovely gift -think of a little mason jar of this at each place setting for Thanksgiving or a fall dinner party.
Caramel Pumpkin Butter S'mores
We used our Pumpkin Butter to make fall flavoured s’mores -you might have noticed them set up on the table for our fall home tour.
I set up a sweet little s’mores buffet for us, with graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate, and our caramel pumpkin butter. We used this sweet spread as a delicious way to add some pumpkin goodness to our smores for the fall season. These are perfect for autumn campfires, or use a candle inside to roast your marshmallows as a great way to enjoy s'mores anytime.

My favorite is to enjoy this pumpkin spread is on fresh scones -get our easy food processor scones recipe here. It's also a great addition for fall to a bowl of vanilla ice cream. If you love all things pumpkin this time of year, you'll love the sweet creamy caramel, combined with fresh pumpkin and warm spices when you make your own pumpkin butter. Recipe
Caramel Pumpkin Butter
Ingredients
- ½ cup dulce de leche
- ¼ cup canned pure pumpkin puree or 1 pie pumpkin
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Instructions
- Make this caramel pumpkin butter, with canned pumpkin puree or homemade pumpkin puree. To make your own homemade pumpkin puree cut a small pie pumpkin in half, scrape out the seeds, and lay it in a baking dish. Roast the pumpkin in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20-25 min. until it is soft and tender when pierced with the tip of a knife. Let it cool slightly, then scrape the cooked pumpkin out of the skin and pureed it in a food processor or with an immersion blender until it is completely smooth. Or skip this step and used canned pumpkin puree.
- Combine ¼ cup of the pumpkin puree with the dulce de leche, and the pumpkin pie spice in a small saucepan. Cook the pumpkin mixture over high heat, stirring the whole time until the mixture has thickened to a butter like consistency. Remember it will thicken slightly more as it cools.
- Store in an airtight container like a mason jar in the fridge, and enjoy.
