DIY Mermaid Crown: use some shells, faux pearls, hair bands and hot glue to create your own beautiful Mermaid Crown. Perfect for dress up, or as part of a Mermaid Party!
We made an easy and fun DIY Mermaid Crown for our Mermaid Birthday Party. They were the perfect mermaid accessory and the girls loved making them and wearing them.
These are great for dress up. These are the perfect finishing touch to your mermaid costume. And for any mermaid themed party, a mermaid tiara is a perfect alternative to a birthday party hat or plastic crown. These would also make great gifts to any mermaid lover. We included ours as party favors for our mermaid themed party. Our little mermaid loved them!
These are really fun mermaid crafts to do with older kids. We used hot glue gun, so this is best done with older kids, or an adult helper for a little girl. If you did want to use this as kids' craft ideas, you might want to use low heat glue guns.
You can pick up most of the supplies at the dollar store, making this a really inexpensive craft to make. We used an assortment of shells. If you want more exiotic pieces like sea glass or small sand dollars which would both be a great addition, you might need to look at a craft store. It's good to incorporate shells of different shapes and sizes for interest. The Unicorn horns shells are a great to add some height to your crown design.
Materials:
- sea shells
- hair bands
- hot glue
- pearls
How To Make a Mermaid Crown:
We started by laying out a design of sea shells. It's a great idea to pick a focal point for the center, and then fill out in a symmetrical pattern, repeating the pattern on each side.
When we were happy with the design we hot glued them on to the hairbands. Adding in some smaller shells, and smaller pieces like pretty faux pearls as the last step.
Keep in mind that you don't want anything poking downward at the base of your crown, that would be uncomfortable when you're wearing head band. Also, when you're making your own mermaid crown you want the crown to be able sit on your head without tipping over and falling off, so keep your design balanced at the front of the crown. The shells can get kind of heavy.
Also you can decide whether you want the hair band worn further back on your head and the design on the very top, or the hair band worn more forward and the design angled to sit up slightly like a mermaid princess crown.
Equipment
- hot glue gun
Materials
- assorted sea shells
- hair bands
- hot glue
- pearls
Instructions
- Lay out a design of sea shells. You may choose a focal point for the centre, and create a symmetrical pattern, repeating the pattern on each side.
- Hot glue the sea shells the head band, starting in the middle and working your way out, with the large shells first, and then filling in with smaller shells and faux pearls. Take care that nothing is poking downward, and that the crown will balance and not fall off your head when it's finished.
Optional: Finish off with some faux gemstones and glitter for a more sparkly look.
Experiment a little and see what you like. 😉
More Options
More great options are to add a little sparkle to your crown. You could do this by incorporating in some sparkly pipe cleaners, or some small plastic gems and glitter for more of a princess look to your own crown.
We had so much fun creating these fun crafts. These crowns were one of the best mermaid crafts we've done. They were such a fun addition to our mermaid party. And the best part has been the added bonus of using them for dress-up play afterward.
With your own beautiful DIY Mermaid Crown, life really is a party!
