Holiday Mantel: DIY macrame garland, layered with asymmetrical garland, and DIY star garland. Plus lots of trees, and brass pieces.
I'm excited to share my holiday mantel with you today and give you a few fun ideas. This year it's a little bit eclectic, a little bit boho, and a little bit pink.
Garland and Stockings
I started out knowing I'd like to incorporate an asymmetrically look to the garland. This year for the first time I used a faux garland, and I have to say that as much as I love then look and smell of real greens, the faux ones are so much easier. I certainly don't miss the sheading needles.
I wanted a layered effect so I used my favourite macrame garland, it's an easy DIY project read all about how I made this macrame garland here. On top the macrame I used the faux greens, and doubled up the left side to make it a little thicker there. On top of that I used a branch. This is one I found in the woods one day. It was so pretty and moss covered that I brought it home and it in a few spots.
The stockings are looped over the branch, ready for Santa and adding lots of texture and interest. And lastly one more layer of garland with this sweet little star garland. It's a fun DIY project made from polymer clay, see the whole DIY star garland tutorial here. The stars are painted with a little iridescent paint, and the gold wire adds a little sparkle.
Trees and Brass
Up on the mantel I've done a little forest of small trees. I didn't worry about matching so there's a mix of bottle brush trees, glass, ceramic, glitter and tinsel. The eclectic look of them all grouped together is so much fun. I stuck with mostly neutrals, but there's a little pink and and a green to match the rest of my holiday decor this year.
I also adding in a few brass pieces. The candles sticks are some from the thrift store, along with some thrifted candles in our pink and colours. And over on the other side there's another brass accent. I found this little brass deer this summer while we were staying a cottage that has the best thrift stores near by. I think they usually come in a pair, but I was happy to find even one and I'll certainly have my eyes out for another when thrifting.
Art Work
The black lanterns help to ground everything and tie in the black lettering on the poster. The poster is inspired by the old 1950's Christmas cartoon classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. This oldie is a favourite of mine because of the beautiful message that there is a place for everyone, even the misfits. The poster is available for download in our shop here. I had it printed as a black and white engineer print at the local office store. Find the tutorial to add the inexpensive wood top and bottom here.
This mantel is a little taste of what's to come with my Christmas home tour next week -I can't wait to share with you.
With a holiday mantel like this one, life really is a party!
