Kit Kat Ice Cream Recipe -delicious homemade vanilla ice cream base, with our favourite chocolate bar mixed in for a little chocolate and some crunch.
This Kit Kat Ice Cream Recipe is a favourite and sure to make many appearances at our house over the summer. If you're a fan of kit kat candy bars, you're sure to love this homemade ice cream recipe full of chopped kit-kat pieces. Kit kat bars have always been a childhood favorite. You can buy store-bought ice cream in kit kat flavor at grocery stores, but it really can not compare with this homemade version. The vanilla custard ice cream base is rich and so creamy, and the crunchy milk chocolate kit kat pieces are the perfect combination. This time of year, when the weather is hot, it's the perfect summertime treat, made with simple ingredients.
Ice Cream Machine
You will need an ice cream machine to churn this ice cream. We have an ice cream maker, but we rarely use it. Let me tell you, it's worth getting that baby out for this recipe, it's really, really good. For most ice cream makers, the churning section must be frozen to use it. It's worth storing this section in the freezer so you're ready to make your own ice cream anytime you want to. If you don't store this part in the freezer, be sure to pre-chill it the day before you want to make this recipe.
Kit Kats were always a favourite chocolate bar of mine, and adding them to ice cream makes them even better.
Cut the kit kat bars into large chunks before adding them into the churned ice cream during the last few minutes.
I think this might be my new favourite ice cream. I'm really a vanilla girl, and the addition of the kit kat is kind of perfect -not too chocolaty, but a nice little crunch with the delicious little flecks of real vanilla too. My kids also loved it.
Using a thermometer is a great way to take all the guesswork out of the recipe too. Definitely a make-again and again recipe. This easy recipe has only a few simple steps and make such a delicious treat. It's perfect for enjoying with your family or serving to friends this summer.
Serve your creamy ice cream in an ice cream cone, bowl, or in waffle cones.
Recipe
Kit Kat Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 3 cups half-and-half cream
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 8 large egg yolks
- 1 ¼ cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 vanilla bean optional
- 4 Kit Kat bars
Instructions
- Place half-and-half and the heavy cream into a saucepan, and heat over medium heat. Bring the mixture just to a simmer, stirring occasionally and remove from heat.
- Next, in a medium bowl whisk the egg yolks until they lighten in colour, then gradually whisk in the sugar. Now temper the cream mixture by gradually adding small amounts of the heated cream, until ⅓ has been added. Finally pour in the remainder and return the entire mixture to the saucepan. Continue to cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, reaching 170 to 175 degrees F.
- Next pour the cream and egg mixture into a large bowl and cool at room temperature half an hour. Stir in the vanilla, and the inside scraping of the vanilla bean (or omit the vanilla bean and use 2 teaspoon of vanilla extract). Refrigerate the mixture 4-8 hours until the temperature is 40 degrees F or below.
- Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer’s direction to churn ice cream. Meanwhile, chop the kit kat bars into small pieces. Finally during the last 5 min as you churn in the ice cream maker, add in the chopped kit kat pieces. Enjoy from the ice cream maker as soft serve or freeze 3-4 hours in the freezer in an air-tight container for the ice cream to fully harden
