Mermaid Party Activities and Games: ideas for your mermaid themed party like dressing up, a craft, sandcastles, and a water fight.
We were celebrating my oldest daughter Paige's 13th birthday. Perhaps we're at the end of themed parties now. As she gets older I'm sure her and her friends ideas of fun will change and might not include themed birthday parties, but as they were all 12 and younger, we snuck in one more beautiful themed party for them. Keep them young. 😉
My daughter loves to swim and so this beach themed party was absolutely perfect for her. It was so much fun planning it and even more fun at the actual party. I hope you find some of these mermaid birthday party ideas helpful.
Beach Location
We live on the shores of lake Ontario, just outside of Toronto. We're about a 10 min. drive away from our closest beach. In the summer we love to go down to the beach for a walk or swim. And summer holidays usually involve at least one beach day a week for me and my girls, since there's so many nice lakeside parks and beaches near us.
For this party we scouted out a perfect spot with a few picnic tables in the morning, and got everything all set up early. The girls came around 11, and we had a great time playing and enjoying a beach picnic lunch together, and enjoying some themed games and activities.
If you don't live near the beach a pool party would be a great option for a mermaid theme party too.
Mermaid-Themed Party Decor Ideas
The colour scheme for the party was aqua, Paige's favourite colour and the perfect colour for a mermaid party. Choosing aqua also made it easy when we went looking for mermaid party supplies. We hung up some beautiful bunting, and a lots of paper lanterns over the picnic party table hanging from the tree branches.
We added in some garden flowers and weighed down our vases with beach rocks, which looked so pretty and kept them from tipping over in the breeze. And we sprinkled sea shells all around too, that I picked up at the local dollar store.
There's lots more details about the picnic table set up here in Part II of the Mermaid Party -The Food.
Rustic Mermaid Signs
We also made some simple signs out of some old rustic boards for our mermaid themed party. To make them, I wrote the words first in chalk and then with some white craft paint. These rustic signs looked so beachy and added so much to the party area. We used them to mark out different stations for the activities, which is always fun for a kid's party so that the kids can have an idea of all the fun activities you have planned for them.

Get Your Mermaid On Outfits
We made fun seashell mermaid crowns before hand -find the easy tutorial to make mermaid crowns here.
Mermaid necklaces or bracelets would have been a great addition too. If you're planning something similar you could set up a craft area with some beads, shell charms, and letter beads where the girls could create their own mermaid necklace or bracelet to include with their outfit too.
One tip is to bring a small mirror so that the girls can see themselves in the different crowns. The crowns are such a fun twist on traditional birthday hats for a party.
Everyone got to pick one to wear for the party. After the party they could each take theirs home with them. We also had a mermaid tail beach cover up for everyone. I found these on sale at an outlet mall, and grabbed 7 of them. I thought they were absolutely perfect for the party, and great party favors for the guests. These were such a great way to get all the guests excited about the mermaid theme as soon as they arrived.
Painting Mermaid Peg Dolls Craft
This was a great activity for a party with guests of different age groups. My daughter and her school friends spent a long time painting theirs with lots of details on their little mermaids, and chatting away as they worked. The younger guests were done a bit more quickly and moved on to another activity, so this was a really good idea for a party with more than one age group.
After the paint dried, I put each one into the girls party bags to take home.
I love having lots of different activities where everyone can find something they love and your little guests can play the afternoon away at whichever themed activities they like best.
Sand Castle Building Mermaid Party Game
The kids could make whatever sand art they wanted, like sea creatures or a castle. Again, some girls worked for a long time creating their perfect castle, adding a layer of seaweed, wishing stones, shells, and flags and others prefered to swim or play.
You might also want to make this into a great game with small prizes for the best sand castle or sand creation. You could adult volunteers judge, or have the kids themselves vote for a winner. If you're giving out prized, you might store them in a treasure chest to fit the theme, and let kids pick their favourite.
Water Fight Mermaid Party Game
We had a lovely lunch -which you can read all about here in our Mermaid Party -Part II. Then it was time for a fun water fight! We bought some really fun water blasters from the dollar store that everyone could use for the party and take home after. This was a really fun mermaid party game. The girls split themselves into teams. They had a great time squirting and chasing each other in and out of the water.
I hope some of these amazing ideas inspire your own fun mermaid games and activities, at your next mermaid party. I hope they make it the best mermaid party ever.
