St. Patrick's Night In -Dinner and a Movie Ideas for St Patrick's Day: recipes, Irish drink ideas, and St. Patrick's Day Movie ideas.
St. Patrick's Day this year falls on a Sunday, and it's perfect for a fun night in celebrating with some Irish food, Irish films, and Irish drinks. Enjoy a night in with these food and St. Patrick's Day movie ideas.
Irish Drinks
The perfect night in starts with a nice drink -and since you're not driving we'll start at the bar cart.
I love a sweet cider, and my husband loves a Guinness -both perfect for St. Patrick's Day.
And perhaps after dinner, how about a coffee with a little Bailey's just to be festive?
Dinner Ideas
Over the years I've made a lot of St. Patrick's Day inspired recipes to celebrate but here are some of my very favourites, all of which would be perfect to enjoy in front of the tv enjoying an Irish movie.
How about an Irish inspired ploughman's lunch?
This Irish soda bread is easy to make and so good with butter, Irish cheddar, ham, apples, pickled onions, and hard boiled eggs. Yum. Get all the details and recipe to make your own Irish Ploughman's Lunch here.
These Irish Inspired St. Patrick's Day Burgers are making my mouth water, just looking at the photo. We made our own potato buns, and then added on top Irish style bacon, and Irish cheddar.
Serve these, of course with potato chips, or fries and you pretty much have the perfect St. Patrick's Day meal. Get the recipe and instructions for the St. Patrick's Day Burger here.
Another favourite of mine is this Steak ,Guiness, and Mushroom Pie.
This rich hearty pie is perfect to slowly cook on a Sunday afternoon, and enjoy curled up in front of the tv.

Dessert
For dessert, make a banoffee pie, it's so, so good!
This pie is made with a combination of bananas and toffee, and whip cream -yum! You make the toffee by boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk for hours until it becomes beautiful and caramelized. This pie is so good, and loved all over the United Kingdom. Find my Banoffee Pie recipe here.
St. Patrick's Day Movie Ideas
Here's a list of movies that would be perfect for St. Patrick's Day. Some are light, love stories. Other's are stories of poverty and over coming adversity. And others shed some light on the political issues in Ireland and all the heartbreak that they sometimes bring.
The Commitments
This movie was a favourite of mine when I first saw it in 1991. It's all about the formation of a soul band in Dublin Ireland. The music in the movie is amazing. Be warned though, this movie is rated R for language.
My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown
This movie is based on the true story of Christy Brown, born with cerebral palsy in a poor working class family in Ireland in 1932. He could control only his left foot, and used it to become an amazing artist. This movie is sad at times, but an amazing story of overcoming adversity. Critically acclaimed as well.
Circle of Friends
If you'd like to watch a love story about a young Irish couple this is a nice movie. Full of some great scenery, and great accents, a little heart ache too. Nice coming of age story.
Angela's Ashes
This might be my personal favourite of all my recommendations. It's sad, and funny, and also based on a true story. It's the tale of Frankie in his family, impoverished and living in Limerick Ireland, around 1935. You might need some kleenex for this one, it's a bit of tear jerker. It's based on Frank McCort's autobiography, and after watching it I went on to read more of his autobiographical work.
Brooklyn
Another sweet coming of age story, this one takes place in 1950's Brooklyn, New York, and back home in Ireland. A young women must choose where to build here life, and there are pulls on both sides of the Atlantic.
In The Name Of The Father
The story of an Irish family that were falsely imprisoned for an IRA bombing in London that they did not commitment. You'll be shocked at the level of discrimination and that such a thing could happen in 1974.
These are my top food and film pairings for the perfect cozy St. Patrick's Night In. With a drink, dinner, and movie to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, life really is a party!

Great choices . . . we are having friends in for dinner the night before and while I have lots of ideas for greening the place, I am borrowing a few of yours too! Sunday night may well be burgers and a movie. Cheers & Slainte
