Summer Decorating Ideas Summer Home Tour: how to decorate for summer with lighter colours and fabrics, flowers and plants.
Home tours are always a favourite to share and this time around I've got lots of summer decorating ideas. I added lots of pretty green plants -real and faux, beautiful dried flowers and garden flowers, lots of wicker baskets ready for picnics, and touches of pink for an airy, easy style this summer.
As this summer kicks off we're still in a lockdown here in Ontario, but we're full of hope that as summer rolls on, and more and more people are able to be vaccinated, we'll hopefully soon be able to return to normal. In the meantime, we're spending more time than ever at home, so it's nice to add some summer touches for us to enjoy.
Simplified Decor For Summer
I wanted to simplify things a little for summer, with us spending so much time outside in the garden. It's nice for inside to feel easy, and airy, and bright. I removed doormats, and edited decor a little. We also lightened up the colours with lots of white, cream, and touches of pink. Despite my desire to simplify things though, I just can't get away from layering decor to make things feel interesting, and collected. It's my style. So even an edited version of things around here are still quite layered, and full -but a little less and more restrained than other seasons.
Summer Decorating Ideas in the Dining Room
In the dining room, the first room when you enter our house, there's a little console table beside the door. We've got some picnic baskets all ready for the season, and adding warmth to the whole space with the rattan, and faux rattan. I'm also using some dried and garden flowers this season, including some dried grasses. I think the pink bunny tails are my favourite.
I used a few glass cloches here, to accent a few plants and the prettiest purple rock. And on the letter board, "blessed are the curious for they will have adventures". It's the perfect summer inspiration we need to go out adventuring, and find even more treasures to display.
Into the dining room, and I've kept the dining room table really simple. I used a vintage wooden bowl and filled it with dried straw flowers. Summer is the season of flowers and this is a lovely way to include them. I'm growing some straw flowers in the garden this year for the first time, so we'll see if I am able to add to this collection.
On my little bar cart in the corner, it's looking more like a plant stand -and I love it. These handmade pottery plates and my favourite cutlery are ready for summer dinners.
Over on the other side of the room, we're ready to celebrate. The beautiful handmade banner is a new addition. The candle holder is one my sister and brother-in-law made for Christmas and it looks amazing here filled with pink candles. What are we celebrating? Summer of course. That's reason enough to celebrate.
This room is feeling perfect for summer and ready to make life a party!
The Living Room
There's another basket, and some vintage wool blankets ready for any summer picnic in this little spot between the dining room and living room.
On the fireplace mantel, I've kept things easy by repeating more dried grasses in these beautiful vintage water bottles and demi johns. Everything feels bright and airy and perfect for summer.
Lighter Fabrics and Colours for Summer
On the couch, I've added some cushions in light colours of white and cream, with touches of pink. The linen cushions feel so perfect for summer. And lots of green plants are perfect for summer.
On the coffee table, I've kept the airy and bright feeling with clear glass candle holders, and these pretty white porcelain mushrooms -reminding me to go on some adventures in the woods this summer.
And over on the other side, there's more of the same, light and airy white and pink.
Add Flowers and Plants
My favourite detail of my summer decor is this curtain of flowers. I used more beautiful pink dried straw flowers and threaded them onto white thread. I hung them in the pass through for the perfect summer flower addition.
The Kitchen
Into the kitchen, more touches of pink, flowers from the garden, and plants are the perfect simple summer decor. These snowball tree branches on the table are such a favourite of mine. They remind me of growing up, because we always had a large snowball tree, and my mom would always bring some in and put them on the table when they bloomed. They're a little messy, but it's the most beautiful mess. It's snowing tiny, perfect white flowers.
On the back wall, I've hung this beautiful picnic poster. My daughter designed it for me as a infographic for a recent post on what to pack for a picnic. I loved it so much I made it available as a free printable here. To display it, I printed it as an inexpensive colour engineer print, and it's perfect for summer. I styled it with a few more wicker picnic baskets, and garden flowers. See how I made the pink dip dyed tassels here.
Over on the other side of the room, a spot for some garden flower arranging.
Kitchen Open Shelves
And lastly, our open shelves. We re-did this area and made these DIY open shelves a few years ago -see how here, and they're always a favourite of mine to decorate. I haven't changed them much this summer. Most of the pink was there already and it's just so pretty that it needed to stay. 😉
The one new addition this area is my new white kettle, which I love, and the the coffee station. Read all about how I put together the coffee station here, including the DIY labels and "Freshly Brewed Happiness" sign.
I really like how airy and bright, and simple this decor is, It feels perfect for summer when we'll be spending more and more time outside enjoying the garden. With all these summer decorating ideas, life really is a party.
