Moana Inspiration
We enjoyed our sweet and sour pork kebabs as part of our Moana dinner and movie night -check out all the details here. It was the perfect tropical addition to our menu. Serve with white rice or brown rice for a great dinner. We were inspired by the movie. There’s a sweet scene in the movie where Moana eats some pork in front of Pua the pig. After saying “Mmmm, that’s good pork” she notices Pua, and makes an excuse to leave. We wanted to make some good pork for the evening too, just don’t tell Pua. 😉 Whether you're celebrating a movie night or not, you will love this truly good pork.
Balance of Flavors
The juicy pieces of pork tenderloin coated in the tangy sauce have a wonderful complex flavor. We love making these into kababs and adding all our favorite vegetables like green bell pepper, red and yellow peppers, and red onions or green onions. And don't forget the pineapple. The pineapple adds more sweetness to the this dish and is such a great combination with the pork. We used canned pineapple chunks for our sweet and sour pork kebabs for the sake of convenience, but you can use fresh pineapple if you prefer. Just remember that you will also need some canned or fresh pineapple juice in addition to the fresh pineapple, if you are not reserving the juice from the canned pineapple.
This easy homemade sweet and sour sauce has a perfect balance of sweet and sour. Ingredients like the rice vinegar add the sour to the dish, while the pineapple juice, sugar and ketchup bring lots of sweet for the perfect sweet & sour combination. Adding in the little bit of cornstarch thickens the homemade sauce and gives it the perfect viscosity applying it to our kebabs.
Pork
We used pork tenderloin to make our pork kebabs, but you could also use pork shoulder or pork chops cut into bite-sized pieces of 1-inch cubes for this sweet and sour pork dish.
Substitute Chicken
Not a fan of pork, but love everything else? You can substitute the pork in this dish with chicken if you prefer, and make sweet and sour chicken. It's equally delicious in this dish.
These sweet and sour pork kebabs are a real favourite, the sweet of the sauce, and the pineapple, combined with the savoury pork and vegetables, and the tang from the sauce is a winning combination you will love if you're a fan of sweet and sour dishes. We love this tangy dish served with simple steamed rice. Made with simple ingredients, it's sure to become one of your favorite delicious recipes. This beautiful sauce comes together in just a couple of minutes and add so much amazing flavor to the dish.
Grilling
Grilling the pork and fresh produce adds such great flavor to this recipe. But if you don't have access to an outdoor bbq to grill your sweet and sour pork kebabs you can cook this recipe on an indoor grill or on a grill pan.
